A new study out of Australia has raised serious concerns about the long-term health effects of sweetened beverages—whether sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened.
Researchers analyzed data from the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study, which followed over 36,000 individuals between the ages of 40 and 69. Participants self-reported their dietary habits and diabetes status over several years.
The findings were striking:
Drinking just one can of an artificially sweetened soft drink per day was associated with a 38% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2DM) compared to those who rarely consumed sweetened beverages.
Both sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened beverages were linked to increased diabetes risk.
The results suggest that replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners may not offer the protection many people assume.
The study concluded: “Both sugar and artificially sweetened beverages were linked to an increased risk of T2DM. The findings highlight the need for public health measures to control the intake of sweetened beverages.”
What This Means for You: Type 2 diabetes is strongly influenced by lifestyle choices, and even seemingly “better” alternatives like diet sodas may still drive risk. Over time, these drinks may affect metabolism, gut health, and insulin sensitivity—laying the groundwork for chronic disease.
